After a great opening weekend, the entire Monster Trucks Unlimited team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for their first major stadium event of 2012. The postponement of the Houston Monster Jam from the prior weekend created a unique situation for the team, as all three team trucks were in attendance. While Steve Sims and Bryan Wright were in their normal rides of Stone Crusher and Monster Magic, Morgan Kane’s Stone Crusher was given a facelift for the weekend to fill in as El Toro Loco. The night started off well for both Sims and Kane as they advanced into round two with Sims defeating teammate Monster Magic, while Kane knocked out Monster Mutt. Round two saw both of their racing efforts ended by Anderson’s, with Sims being defeated by Adam Anderson, while Kane lost to Dennis Anderson.
The sprawling freestyle course saw many options for the drivers and put the creative minds of Morgan Kane and Steve Sims to the test, and they rose to the the occasion during their performances. Kane didn’t waste any time, coming right out of his pit and airing the truck out with a big crossthread over the van stack. The opening move set the tone for his freestyle, as Kane put in several nice jumps, including a massive leap over the double van stack and a few more great crossthread hits before finishing his run with a salute to the sold out crowd.
Steve Sims went all out with the Stone Crusher for a fantastic freestyle performance. Throughout the over two minute run Sims pushed the Stone Crusher to the limit. Sims started out strong with several big air jumps before lining up for some great crossthreads across the floor. At the start of bonus time, Sims opened up with a great combo move. Sims crossthreaded the bus stack, then bounced the rebound up into a wheelstand, and drove off the stack, bouncing off the sidewalls on the landing and into a save. The strong performances scored well with the judges as Sims earned a 25 to tie for 5th, while Kane finished 6th with a 22.
The next two stops for the Stone Crusher team brings Steve Sims south to Tampa, Florida, while Morgan Kane gets to perform in his home state as they visit Charlotte, North Carolina. Be sure to check out our schedule to see where we’ll be next.
